Your questions

What is a VIN?

The vehicle identification number: 17 characters, one per vehicle. It is the worldwide standard (ISO 3779). Some vehicles sold new in Japan carry a shorter chassis number instead.

Why no I, O or Q?

So they are not confused with 1 and 0. If you read one on your vehicle, it is a 1 or a 0.

Does the VIN give the engine and options?

Not on its own: the vehicle code (characters 4 to 8) can only be read with the manufacturer's catalogue. When Sherlock does not know a vehicle, it asks you for the make, model and year.

Is my VIN sent anywhere?

Not on this page: decoding happens in your browser. If you start a part search, the VIN goes to our server, never to a third party.
