Legal notice and privacy
What we receive, why, and what we never do with it. In plain words.
In short: your VIN is used for your search and stays 90 days in our database; our servers send it to no third party. No advertising, no audience tracking. Your logbook stays in your browser; a button in the logbook erases everything. For anything else: contact@dap98.com.
Who operates Sherlock Parts
Sherlock Parts is published and operated by Discount Sourcing LLC, a Delaware limited liability company (USA), 8 The Green #22449, Dover, DE 19901, USA. Phone: +687 28 28 12. E-mail: contact@dap98.com. Publication director: the manager of Discount Sourcing LLC.
Data controller for the processing described below: Discount Sourcing LLC.
In New Caledonia, garage accounts, parts orders and credit top-ups go through DAP98, in Nouméa, a separate seller from Sherlock Parts: contact@dap98.com · +687 28 28 12.
Hosting: Hostinger International Ltd., 61 Lordou Vironos Street, 6023 Larnaca, Cyprus. The server is in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); backups are with the same host.
What we receive, and why
- Your garage account request: the garage name, your name, your phone number and, if you give them, your e-mail, town, business number (RIDET) and message. To call you back, open your account and follow it up.
- Your searches with an account: the VIN or plate, and the part asked for. To find the part number and keep your garage's history. They are visible to your garage and to the team that runs Sherlock, in particular to answer you when you hand a search over to an expert. The part numbers you confirm serve your next searches; they are not shown to other garages.
- Your searches without an account (home page): the VIN, the parts requested and, if you give them, the make, model, year and engine. To answer you and to measure what the service finds or fails to find. Neither your IP address nor your name is stored with them; do not type your name in the field. A VIN identifies a vehicle, and so sometimes its owner: we treat it as personal data.
- Counting your free searches: to count your 3 free searches of the day, your browser keeps a random identifier (it is erased with this site's data in your browser); the server keeps only an anonymous fingerprint of that identifier and of your address, in memory and for the day only.
- Your remembered vehicle, your logbook, your latest searches, your riddle streak: kept in your browser (local storage). The logbook, saved searches and streak are never sent; a remembered vehicle's VIN is sent only when you run a search with it. Your latest search (VIN included) also stays in this tab until you close it, for the back button. The logbook's “Erase everything from this device” button removes it all; so does clearing this site's data. Pages you have already opened and the logbook page are also kept by your browser so they work offline; they contain no personal data.
- Your access code: kept in your browser (local storage), so you don't retype it. “Déconnexion” (log out) erases it.
- The server's technical logs record the IP address, the time and the address of the page requested, never the VIN or the part searched for, for security.
- Legal basis: your request, for searches and accounts; our legitimate interest, for security logs, counting free searches and service statistics.
- Who has access: the Discount Sourcing LLC and DAP98 team that runs Sherlock, and our hosting provider. Discount Sourcing LLC is a US company, the server is in Malaysia and the team in New Caledonia: this data is processed outside the European Union.
What we don't do
<ul><li>Our servers never send your VIN to a third party. If you open a parts diagram on an outside site yourself (PartSouq, Megazip…), the link gives it the VIN: the screen says so first.</li><li>When our history does not have the answer, Sherlock queries AIs that search the web (Perplexity, Anthropic and OpenAI, through OpenRouter). They receive the vehicle description (make, model, year, engine) and the name of the part, with its side, not the VIN, nor what you typed for the part. A filter holds back what, in the vehicle fields, looks like a number or a sentence; it is not foolproof, so type only the vehicle there. Their answers are kept for 14 days at most.</li><li>No advertising, no advertising trackers, no analytics cookies. Fonts and page scripts come from this site, and this site only.</li><li>Your details are neither sold nor passed on.</li></ul>How long, and your rights
How long. Searches with no account: 90 days in the database, then at most 7 months in backups. Technical logs: they rotate by size and erase themselves, usually within a few months. Account requests refused or not followed up: 12 months. Garage account: as long as it is open; once closed, it is erased on request, except accounting records, kept as long as the law requires.
Your rights. You can ask to access, correct, erase, restrict or transfer your data, object to processing based on our legitimate interest, and decide what happens to it after your death. Write to contact@dap98.com: we answer within one month. For a search with no account, give the VIN concerned: it is the only way to find it. You can also complain to the CNIL, the French data protection authority: 3 place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07, France, www.cnil.fr.
Brands mentioned
The manufacturer and brand names mentioned belong to their owners; they only serve to designate vehicles and parts. Sherlock Parts is not affiliated with any manufacturer.
What a part number is worth
Sherlock Parts helps you look for a part number. It does not sell parts and plays no part in your purchase. A part number shown here does not guarantee that the part fits your vehicle: compare it with the number on the original part, or have it checked by a professional, before buying. Outside sites (parts diagrams) are independent of us and have their own terms. Credit top-ups are sold by DAP98; its terms and prices are given to you before any top-up.
